I really love this calculator...Once you learn how to use it. Seriously this calculator is pretty unreasonable to use until you read a detailed manual (and not the one TI gives you...that thing is junk). I highly recommend you pick up the idiot's guide or something along those lines to get the most out of this calculator. After a weekend of reading the idiot's manual I was good to go. Once you learn how to input formulas and commands properly in this calculator then it's downhill running from there. The TI89 is super powerful and simple to use once you get use to it. I rarely use another calculator permitting on the exam. It comes with strong financial, mathematical, and statistical functions that is great for undergrad classes. It also has loads of option even down to how you want you're decimals rounded and various other picky mathematical settings.
My only complaint with this calculator is that the case is made out of some cheap plastic. My case is all cracked, scratched, and dinged up. I take care of this calculator and have never dropped it. This plastic just wears down really quickly. I'll be needing a new case soon at this rate.

This calculator is a must for any Calculus AB class or above. It is the first in the TI series that handles integrals, differentials, 3D graphing, differential equations, user-defined variables, upper and lowercase lettering, and custom flash apps... to name a few. It has a visually-pleasing home screen, to allow you to see equations as they would naturally be written, instead of in a single line filled with parenthesis. Built-in flash applications allow you to do things like create study cards, edit lists and matrices, edit text, and solve simultaneous equations. The one con about this calculator is that it is much less adept at performing statistical operations, such as linear regression, than the previous TI calculators. The TI-89 Titanium, however, was designed for calculus, so this is not a huge problem.
The buttons are very quiet and responsive. Over time, depending on what they are expose to, then can become occasionally stuck, but anyone who treats this calculator well won't have any trouble with the input. Using this calculator for about 4 hours a week, a fresh set of four Duracell batteries lasted 6 months in the device. This will vary depending on your contrast settings. The case is quite durable, but that's not to say that the components are, so be careful with this.
This is a top-choice calculator for any level Calculus class, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Be sure when you buy this battery-guzzling piece of junk that you also invest in a rechargeable battery kit as well. This thing sucks the batteries EVEN WHEN IT'S TOTALLY OFF! If you don't use it for a month, your batteries will be completely dead. You'll need four AAA's.

My science and math minded daughter used a loner TI-89 all through her senior year of High School and, after being accepted at a very good engineering collage, asked for one of her own as a graduation gift. My daughter could have asked for another model or brand, but she did research and was set the TI-89. This was most useful for use in her AP Calculus and Physics classes so she checked and found that this would also be among the preferred model in her college classes.
This is a seriously complicated device with a large learning curve and is likely more calculator than most people will ever need, but for those that do need these functions this is likely the right choice. I have only used it once or twice out of desperation and was able to navigate the basic functions.
Highly Recommended!
